Beauty and Brokenness: Blessed by a Novena of Grace
2021

March 12 – Fr. Billy Biegler, SJ

Novena of Grace blessing-prayer for the ninth day given by Katie Hennessy:

The Ignatian charism for today is discernment: conscientious choice after a long look at the real. Choose one of the people attending the Novena and prayerfully connect to them as a neighbor. Jesus talks in the gospel today about how God comes close to us in love through our connection with neighbor. See this person’s face and ask God to bless him or her. Thank God for your own incorporation into our community of prayer over these nine days and any new way God in God’s grace has found to relate to you in this blessed world. Deo gratias.

March 11 – Fernando Serna

Novena of Grace blessing-prayer for the eighth day given by Fernando:

Today’s Ignatian charism is humility and self-awareness in the loving look of God upon us. Find a mirror in your house. Have a prayer looking in the mirror — not at yourself but what surrounds you and reminds you of what you see and what you cannot, that we are all people with limited lenses of vision. Ask God’s blessing that how we proceed in movement and decision be with care, tolerance, openness and receptivity. Lastly, look back at the mirror and feel what God is creating in you.

March 10 – Jeanette Grimaldi

Novena of Grace blessing-prayer for the seventh day given by Jeanette:

Today’s charism is life as gift, full of wonder and gratitude. One of the first gifts we received from those who love us is our name. Call God by the name you call Him and ask our Creator to say your name. Be blessed by recalling those who call you by name or nickname, who have crossed your life’s way  and helped you become who you are. Be grateful for the connections revealed in your first name or your surname; you are known by name, not a stranger. Thank God in name for belonging.

March 9 – Dan Beseau

Novena of Grace blessing-prayer for the sixth day given by Dan:

The Ignatian charism for today is imagination and staying with one’s desires. Select an artifact of beauty. Imagine what created its form and expressiveness and try to become alive in its colors and lines. No doubt this object has no clutter but has a sense of perfection. Ask God how you are seen like this and how God’s Spirit takes your beauty to heart. Be taken. Then grateful.

March 8 – Beth Schaller

Novena of Grace blessing-prayer for the fifth day given by Beth:

Today’s charism is compassionate preferences for justice’s sake. Notice a pain or ache in your body and focus on this part of you which unfortunately is worse off than all the rest. How will you treat it differently? In the larger Body of Christ among us, how does God want you to bless the suffering part you may encounter? In ending, gently touch your painful place in gratitude for its gift of learning.

March 7 – Fr. Billy Biegler, SJ

Novena of Grace blessing-prayer for the fourth day given by Fr. Billy:

Our Ignatian charism today is prayer as the conversation of hearts. At home, choose your bible for this blessing-prayer. Holding these ancient texts, composed after prayerfully inspired, thank God for all the various communications of Word with you — a presence beyond words. Listen for a gospel blessing when you are attentive enough to hear. Close your prayer by holding the book to your heart with thanksgiving.

March 6 – Kevin Jeans Gail and Sue Brent

Novena of Grace blessing-prayer for the third day given by Sue Brent:

Our Ignatian charism today is finding God in all things. This blessing prayer finds you looking at where light shines: it may be where sunlight has landed on a particular place or object that has caught its rays. Draw close to that light and ask God to bring home to you what may be lost, where you feel a void, who you may want close again. At the end, thank God for these lights of returns we receive and want.

March 5 – Jim Peck

Novena of Grace blessing-prayer for the second day given by Jim Peck:

Our Ignatian charism today is solidarity and service. Choose a most expensive object you own based on its cost in money and sacrifice. What would it mean to lose it? See God looking at you in the same precious way, yet God is seeing your extensive self, your outreach to others, your charitable web. With open hands, receive God’s blessing on any ruptures in these serving connections and grace for making them whole.

March 4 – Joseph and Grace Byrd

Novena of Grace blessing-prayer for the first day given by Grace Byrd:

Our Ignatian charism today is a mysticism of open eyes. The gospel mentions what may lie outside our very door that we are oblivious to. Today’s blessing prayer invites you to look out your own doorway and see with God what lies within sight — what rich or poor things are attached to your homeplace. What is near? Sense and see with new eyes and talk to God about what God wants to show you. At the end of your prayer when you have received blessing, close it with gratitude and a reverent bow to what is close.
